Wallbox Pulsar Plus: KNX Smart Charging via OCPP and PV Self-Consumption

SmartMāja Engineering Team·2027-09-03·8 min read

Overview

Wallbox Pulsar Plus 7.4 kW single-phase is one of Europe's best-selling residential wallboxes. This guide covers OCPP 1.6J local mode integration with KNX for PV self-consumption charging.

OCPP 1.6J Local Mode Setup

In the myWallbox app, navigate to Settings → Connectivity → OCPP. Set the OCPP URL to the local OCPP server IP, for example 'ws://192.168.1.50:9000/wallbox'. Home Assistant OCPP integration (hacs, evse_ocpp) acts as the local central system.

KNX Integration via Home Assistant

HA automations read OCPP MeterValues (energy Wh, power W) and ChargeState from the OCPP integration and write to KNX via the HA KNX integration. KNX group objects: GA '5/1/1' DPT 1.001 (charge enable — write from KNX to HA to OCPP ChangeAvailability); GA '5/1/2' DPT 9.001 (charge power W — read from OCPP MeterValues); GA '5/1/3' DPT 13.013 (session energy Wh).

PV Self-Consumption Logic

KNX logic monitors PV production (from SolarEdge Modbus, KNX GA '6/1/1') and house consumption (from smart meter Modbus, GA '6/1/2'). Surplus = production minus consumption. When surplus > 1400W (minimum 6A × 230V) for 120 seconds, HA triggers OCPP SetChargingProfile on Wallbox with charging rate = surplus / 230 (rounded down to whole amperes, minimum 6A, maximum 32A). This throttles the Wallbox to consume only surplus solar.

Eco-Smart mode (native Wallbox feature, app-only on Pulsar Plus): not directly accessible via OCPP, so the KNX logic approach above is the recommended integration path.

Commander 2 Alternative

Wallbox Commander 2 (22 kW) has Modbus TCP — register 100 (charge current, A, write), register 200 (session energy, Wh, read), register 201 (charge power, W, read). MDT Modbus Gateway directly reads and writes Commander 2 without needing Home Assistant.

Commissioning

Confirm Wallbox OCPP status in HA logbook — 'ChargePoint connected' message confirms OCPP handshake. Test charge enable by writing KNX GA '5/1/1' = ON and verifying Wallbox LED changes from white (available) to blue (charging).
