SimonsVoss WaveNet Wireless Locks and KNX Integration for Access Scheduling

SmartMāja Engineering Team·2027-03-05·8 min read

SimonsVoss WaveNet digital locking systems offer battery-powered wireless cylinder locks that retrofit into standard door hardware without electrical cabling to the door. Operating at 868 MHz with a range of up to 30 metres per node, WaveNet creates a mesh radio network linking all cylinders and SmartHandles to a WaveNet router connected to the IP network. For KNX integration, the LSM (Locking System Management) software API and the DoorMonitoring function provide event data that can bridge to KNX group addresses for building automation logic, energy management, and emergency scenarios.

SimonsVoss WaveNet and LSM system overview

A WaveNet installation consists of: SmartRelay or SmartCD.WN cylinder locks (battery life 2–4 years, IP55), WaveNet router (WN.router, one per floor or per 30 nodes), SmartServer (Windows server running LSM software). LSM software manages access profiles, user credentials (transponders or SmartCards), and time schedules. The LSM REST API (available in LSM Business and higher licences) allows external systems to query door status, modify access profiles, and receive event notifications. DoorMonitoring feature: each WaveNet cylinder with DoorMonitoring kit (optional reed sensor addition) reports door open/closed state to the WaveNet router, which forwards to LSM. LSM stores the event log and can push events to external systems via API webhooks or direct database polling.

KNX integration via binary output module and LSM API

For hardware-level status integration: LSM DoorMonitoring triggers a KNX binary output module (e.g., Gira output module 2-gang) when a door opens. Wiring: LSM server drives a relay output board (e.g., Advantech ADAM-6060 Ethernet I/O module) — LSM API event → ADAM-6060 output coil → KNX binary input module (MDT SCN-8V.01). For software integration without relay hardware: Home Assistant with custom LSM API integration polls LSM REST API for door status every 5 seconds (or receives webhooks) and writes to KNX group addresses via HA KNX integration. KNX GA scheme for a 20-door WaveNet installation: GA 11/2/[door] — Door open/closed DPT 1.001 (0 = locked/closed, 1 = open). GA 11/3/[door] — Battery low warning DPT 1.005 (1 = battery below 20%). GA 11/4/0 — Fire door release active DPT 1.001.

Time scheduling and access profile control from KNX

KNX weekly time controller (ETS6 internal scheduler or JUNG 2138) sends schedule commands to HA, which then updates LSM access profiles via API: Weekdays 07:00 → write GA 11/5/0 = 1 (business hours active) → HA LSM API call: set access group "Staff" to active on all doors. Weekdays 19:00 → write GA 11/5/0 = 0 → HA LSM API call: set access group "Staff" to inactive; set access group "Security" to active (security personnel only). Weekend: all staff access groups inactive, supervisor group only. This eliminates the need to manually manage LSM schedules — KNX time logic drives LSM profile switching automatically, ensuring access rights always align with building occupancy mode.

Fire door release, hotel room scenario and commissioning

Emergency fire integration: KNX fire alarm GA 12/9/0 = 1 → HA automation sends LSM API call: set all doors tagged "Emergency Exit" to permanently open state → WaveNet router pushes open command to all emergency cylinders via 868 MHz. LSM confirms command receipt with API response; HA logs timestamp for audit trail. Hotel room scenario: KNX energy management receives guest check-in event from PMS (Property Management System) via HA → GA 11/6/[room] = 1 (room occupied) → welcome scene activates (DALI lights to 300 lux, HVAC comfort mode). At checkout: GA 11/6/[room] = 0 → LSM API revokes guest transponder on room door → KNX energy standby mode. Battery low monitoring: LSM API reports battery percentage per cylinder. HA automation: when battery < 20% → write GA 11/3/[door] = 1 → KNX visualisation panel (MDT Glastaster II) shows maintenance alert icon for that door. Commissioning steps: (1) Verify WaveNet radio mesh with LSM coverage map — ensure all cylinders show signal strength > −80 dBm. (2) Test LSM API from HA: call GET '/api/v1/doors' → verify all 20 doors return status. (3) Trigger fire alarm GA 12/9/0 = 1 from ETS6 → confirm LSM releases all emergency exits within 3 seconds. (4) Simulate battery low: reduce threshold in LSM test mode → confirm GA 11/3/[door] = 1 appears in KNX Group Monitor.
