Optex Outdoor PIR KNX Integration: Perimeter Alarm and Energy-Saving Motion Lighting
Optex BX-80N outdoor PIR technical specification
The Optex BX-80N is a wall-mount dual-element passive infrared detector designed for outdoor perimeter use. Detection range: 12m × 12m (wide angle), 100m × 3m (long range option BX-80NR). Rated IP54, operating temperature -25°C to +55°C. Relay output: potential-free NO contact (maximum 50 mA at 12V DC). The unit includes anti-masking capability (a separate LED-based masking detection circuit) and a tamper switch that opens the relay on housing removal. Power: 10–16V DC (supplied via the MDT SCN-8V.01 auxiliary 12V output, or a separate PSU).
Wiring to MDT SCN-8V.01 (8-channel binary input module, 24V DC input sensing): BX-80N relay COM → MDT SCN-8V.01 GND common, BX-80N relay NO → MDT SCN-8V.01 channel input terminal. For tamper monitoring: BX-80N tamper NC relay → second MDT channel input. ETS6 MDT SCN-8V.01 configuration for the alarm channel: contact type = potential-free NO, DPT 1.005 (alarm DPT), send on change, debounce 50 ms. Tamper channel: DPT 1.005, send on change.
KNX GA scheme for perimeter zones
A typical commercial building perimeter uses multiple Optex detectors covering discrete zones. Define a KNX GA scheme for each zone: GA 5/0/0 (Zone 1 — Entrance North, DPT 1.005), GA 5/0/1 (Zone 2 — Car Park East), GA 5/0/2 (Zone 3 — Car Park West), GA 5/0/3 (Zone 4 — Building South Perimeter), GA 5/0/4 (Zone 5 — Fire Escape East). Tamper GAs on a separate sub-group: GA 5/2/0 (Zone 1 tamper), GA 5/2/1 (Zone 2 tamper), etc. Having zone-specific GAs allows the KNX automation to respond differently to each zone — a car park alarm triggers only outdoor lighting and CCTV, while a building perimeter alarm additionally triggers access control door lock confirmation.
Optex REDSCAN RLS-3060V LiDAR for multi-zone coverage
For large linear perimeters (fence lines, building facades), the Optex REDSCAN RLS-3060V LiDAR is preferable to multiple PIRs. The REDSCAN projects a horizontal laser scan plane up to 60m × 30m and reports which of 5 configurable detection zones triggered (zones defined as angular segments in the scan plane). Output: RS-232 serial at 9600 baud, proprietary Optex ASCII protocol.
Integration path: REDSCAN RS-232 → Advantech ADAM-4520 (RS-232 to RS-485 converter) → Moxa NPort 5110A (RS-485 to Modbus TCP) → Intesis IN701KNX gateway (Modbus TCP to KNX). The Optex REDSCAN serial protocol must be decoded: a lightweight script on the Moxa NPort (if running Linux) or on a companion Raspberry Pi parses REDSCAN zone output and writes to Modbus holding registers (Register 1 = zone 1 active 0/1, Register 2 = zone 2, etc.). The Intesis gateway then maps these registers to KNX GAs.
Arming schedule and KNX reactions
KNX weekly controller publishes arming status: weekdays 18:00 → GA 5/9/0 = 1 (armed); 08:00 → GA 5/9/0 = 0 (disarmed). Weekends: GA 5/9/0 = 1 continuously. All alarm input GAs (5/0/x) pass through a KNX logic gate conditioned on GA 5/9/0 = 1 before triggering security reactions.
On alarm (zone-specific, e.g., GA 5/0/1 = 1 for Car Park East): DALI exterior luminaires in car park zone → scene 8 (100% brightness, 15-minute hold via staircase timer → return to 20% base security level). ARISTO BewO push notification: zone name ('Car Park East'), time, camera live-view deep link. If building has CCTV with preset capability: KNX logic writes HTTP command via Loxone Miniserver (or similar) to nearest PTZ camera preset.
On tamper (GA 5/2/x = 1): immediate notification regardless of armed state. Tamper events indicate detector hardware interference and must be investigated promptly.
Dual-purpose: energy-saving motion lighting during business hours
Outside armed hours (GA 5/9/0 = 0), alarm GAs are repurposed to control exterior luminaires via motion-activated staircase logic: Zone alarm GA → DALI exterior zone (set to 100%) → staircase timer 5 minutes → return to 10% base level. This eliminates dedicated motion sensor hardware for exterior lighting. The KNX logic uses the armed flag GA 5/9/0 as a mode selector: armed = alarm reaction; disarmed = lighting reaction. Both branches are configured in the same ETS6 logic function block using a gate object.
Commissioning: walk through each detection zone in sequence and verify the correct zone GA activates in ETS6 Group Monitor. Confirm DALI luminaire response matches the expected zone. Simulate tamper by opening the BX-80N housing (with power on) and verify tamper GA activates and BewO notification is received. Test arming schedule by temporarily advancing the KNX time controller and confirming GA 5/9/0 transitions correctly.
