KNX vs Loxone: Which smart home system should you choose?

SmartMāja Engineering Team·2025-05-28·8 min read

KNX and Loxone are two of the most popular building automation systems in Europe. Both are capable, both are used in premium residential and commercial projects — but they are fundamentally different in architecture, philosophy and long-term cost of ownership.

Architecture

KNX is a decentralised bus system. Every device on the bus has its own microprocessor and logic. There is no single controller — if the IP router goes offline, the lights still work, the blinds still respond to the switch. This is a critical advantage in buildings where reliability matters.

Loxone is a centralised system. The Miniserver is the brain — all logic runs on it. If the Miniserver fails, the building loses all automation. Loxone partially mitigates this with the Nano IO extension, but the central dependency remains.

Vendor independence

KNX has 500+ certified manufacturers worldwide. If Gira stops making a product, you buy Schneider. If MDT raises prices, you switch to Hager. The KNX standard guarantees interoperability.

Loxone is proprietary. You buy Loxone hardware, program in Loxone Config software, and depend on Loxone Austria for firmware updates. This creates long-term dependency.

Cost structure

KNX has higher upfront costs — components are more expensive, ETS programming takes longer, and you need a certified KNX Partner. But the long-term maintenance cost is lower: any certified electrician can make changes, and components are available from multiple sources.

Loxone is cheaper upfront but has higher ongoing costs. Configuration changes require Loxone Config and a certified Loxone partner. Extension hardware and licences are proprietary.

Our recommendation

For buildings over 500 m², commercial projects, and any installation where 20-year longevity matters: **KNX**. For smaller residential projects where the owner wants a modern app experience and is comfortable with Loxone's ecosystem: **Loxone is fine**.

We build panels for both — and often combine them (KNX for automation backbone, Loxone for visualisation).
