HDL Automation KNX Hotel Room: DND/MUR Panel, DALI and Card Reader Integration

SmartMāja Engineering Team·2026-11-27·8 min read

HDL Automation KNX products are widely deployed in hotel room automation across the Middle East and increasingly in East European and Southeast Asian markets — offering ETS6-certified KNX devices at 30–50% lower cost than European brands. The HDL KNX hotel room solution combines a DND/MUR (Do Not Disturb / Make Up Room) panel, KNX card reader, DALI gateway, and touchpanel — all programmable in ETS6. This guide covers hardware configuration, KNX group address structure, HVAC setpoint scenes, and commissioning procedure for a standard hotel room.

HDL hotel room KNX hardware set

Standard HDL KNX hotel room BOM: (1) HDL KNX card reader (PoE or 24V DC, RFID 13.56MHz Mifare, KNX binary output on card insertion/removal). (2) HDL DND/MUR panel (2-button panel mounted outside room door: red LED = DND, green = MUR, each button sends KNX DPT 1.001 telegram on press). (3) HDL KNX DALI gateway (64 DALI devices, ETS6 plug-in commissioning). (4) HDL 5-inch TFT KNX touchpanel (wall-mount, KNX TP, shows room temperature, setpoint adjustment, scene buttons). (5) Compatible KNX thermostat/actuator: MDT SCN-HCA.02 or Zennio Z41 Pro (for HVAC setpoint display). (6) KNX power supply: MDT SCN-PS064.01 (640mA, DIN-rail). All HDL KNX devices: individual address via ETS6 programming button, standard KNX TP connection.

Card reader occupancy logic

HDL KNX card reader group objects: (1) Card status (DPT 1.001): 1 = card inserted, 0 = card removed. GA: 10/room_no/0. (2) Card type (DPT 5.010): 1 = guest card, 2 = housekeeping card, 3 = manager card (programmed in reader parameters). ETS6 logic using MDT Logic Module: Card inserted (GA 10/room_no/0 = 1) → HVAC setpoint = 21°C comfort (GA 7/room_no/2), Lighting scene = Scene 1 "Welcome" (GA 1/room_no/5 = 1). Card removed (GA 10/room_no/0 = 0, delayed 5 minutes) → HVAC setpoint = 26°C economy, Lighting scene = Scene 0 "Off". 5-minute delay prevents HVAC setback when guest briefly leaves room. Housekeeping card type (GA 10/room_no/1 = 2) → HVAC stays at 22°C (cleaning mode), Lighting scene = Scene 4 "Cleaning" (100% all lights).

DND/MUR panel KNX integration

HDL DND/MUR panel group objects: (1) DND button pressed (DPT 1.001, 1 on press). GA: 10/room_no/2. (2) MUR button pressed (DPT 1.001, 1 on press). GA: 10/room_no/3. (3) DND LED control (DPT 1.001, write, 1=red LED on). GA: 10/room_no/4. (4) MUR LED control (DPT 1.001, write, 1=green LED on). GA: 10/room_no/5. Logic: DND press → set DND flag GA 10/room_no/6 = 1 (toggle) → DND LED on. MUR press → set MUR flag GA 10/room_no/7 = 1 → MUR LED on → simultaneously clear DND flag. Corridor panel display: hotel management system (PMS) reads DND/MUR KNX GAs via ARISTO REST API or KNXnet/IP → shows housekeeping dashboard (which rooms are DND/MUR). Fermax video intercom integration: DND flag GA 10/room_no/6 = 1 → Comelit 1456B or Fermax 1490 service input = 1 → suppresses intercom bell during DND.

DALI lighting scenes for hotel room

HDL DALI gateway ETS6 plug-in: scan DALI bus → assign short addresses → create groups: Group 0 = All Room DALI, Group 1 = Ceiling (main), Group 2 = Bedside reading, Group 3 = Bathroom. Scene programming: Scene 1 "Welcome" = Group 0 at 60%, warm 2700K (DT8 driver). Scene 2 "Relax" = Group 1 at 20%, Group 2 at 80%, 2700K. Scene 3 "Presentation" (meeting room mode) = Group 0 at 90%, 4000K. Scene 4 "Cleaning" = Group 0 at 100%, 4000K. Scene 5 "Good Morning" = Group 1 at 30% (gentle wake-up). Scene 0 = Off. KNX GA for scene recall: GA 1/room_no/5 (DPT 18.001, HDL DALI gateway scene object). Scene trigger: card inserted → send Scene 1 to GA 1/room_no/5. Card removed + 5min → send Scene 0. DND button → send Scene 2 "Relax". Good night push-button → send Scene 0 (all off) + HVAC setpoint 22°C (sleep mode).

HVAC integration and setpoint scenes

HVAC control: fan coil unit (FCU) controlled via Zennio KLIC-DD or MDT heating actuator. KNX group objects for HVAC: On/Off (GA 7/room_no/0), Mode (GA 7/room_no/1, DPT 20.105), Setpoint (GA 7/room_no/2, DPT 9.001), Room temperature (GA 7/room_no/3, read-only). HDL touchpanel displays room temperature (from GA 7/room_no/3) and setpoint (GA 7/room_no/2 — guest can adjust ±3°C from comfort setpoint via touchpanel). Setpoint limits enforced in ETS6 (MDT Logic Module): min 18°C (comfort − 3°C), max 26°C (comfort + 5°C) — prevents guests setting extreme temperatures. KNX scenes for HVAC setpoints: card inserted → setpoint 21°C, card removed → setpoint 26°C, DND press → setpoint unchanged (maintain comfort during DND).

Project scale and cost comparison

Typical Middle East 200-room hotel: 200 rooms × HDL KNX hotel room set ≈ €450/room (card reader + DND panel + DALI gateway + touchpanel + cables) vs. European brand equivalent (Gira + MDT + Helvar) ≈ €900/room. Total saving: €90,000 for 200 rooms. Both achieve identical ETS6 programming and KNX functionality — HDL uses same KNX Association certified protocol. Risk: HDL product support and firmware updates less established than European brands — specify 10-year spare parts availability in contract. Recommendation: use European brands (MDT, Gira) for KNX actuators and logic modules (reliable, well-documented), HDL for hotel-specific hardware (DND panel, DALI gateway, card reader) where cost saving is largest.
