DoorBird vs 2N: choosing an IP video intercom for KNX projects
IP video intercoms have replaced analogue door stations in smart home projects. DoorBird (German) and 2N (Czech) dominate the EU market. Both offer SIP-based calls, camera, door release — but they suit different projects. Here's how to choose.
DoorBird overview
DoorBird (Bird Home Automation, Berlin) makes Wi-Fi + LAN video intercoms in a distinctive aluminium housing. The D101x series is flush-mounted, the D21x series is surface-mounted. DoorBird connects via SIP (calls to any SIP extension), has a REST API for smart home integration, and offers a native Home Assistant integration. KNX integration is via Home Assistant: doorbell press → HA → KNX group address telegram.
2N overview
2N Telecommunications (Prague, now Axis Communications) makes the most robust and flexible IP video intercom platform in Europe. The IP Verso 2.0 is modular — you snap on camera, RFID reader, keypad, and KNX module. 2N IP Force is vandal-resistant (IK10, IP66). 2N IP Helios handles multi-apartment entry (up to 370 buttons). 2N has a native KNX module (9155023) that sends/receives KNX group address telegrams directly.
KNX integration: DoorBird vs 2N
DoorBird + KNX: Via Home Assistant. REST API → HA → KNX service call. No native KNX module. Bidirectional via HA automations. Works well but depends on HA being online.
2N + KNX: Native KNX module snaps into the IP Verso. Door press → KNX telegram to configured GA. KNX door-open command → Verso relay closes. No middleware required — direct hardware integration. This is why 2N is preferred for standalone KNX projects without a smart home hub.
Camera quality and use cases
DoorBird: 1080p (D101x), up to 180° wide-angle lens. Good image quality, compact housing. Best for single-family homes and apartments where aesthetics matter. 2N IP Verso: 5MP, 120° lens, HDR. Superior image quality. Modular — add RFID reader for access control. Best for premium residential, office entry, and any project needing RFID access.
Audio/video answering
Both support SIP calls to: smartphones (via SIP app or vendor app), tablets, SIP phones, and indoor stations. DoorBird has a dedicated indoor station (DoorBird D101S Indoor). 2N IP Indoor View is a high-quality 7" touch screen indoor station. For Home Assistant: both can display the camera feed in the HA dashboard.
Our recommendation
For premium residential and commercial with KNX: **2N IP Verso 2.0 with KNX module** — native integration, modular flexibility, superior camera. For price-sensitive projects or where KNX integration is via HA anyway: **DoorBird D1101V** — clean design, good API, solid EU service network.
